NATIONAL – What’s going on in Northern Ireland?
Day 4 – The State of N. Ireland
N. Ireland has pretty poor form when it comes to climate action – we are the only devolved nation without a climate bill, we are the 13th worst in the world for Greenhouse Gas emissions per capita and we are the 12th worst in the world for biodiversity loss.
If we are going to turn this around, we need our politicians to know that there is public support for better environment policies and action.
Prayer
Father,
We pray for our politicians who bear such a hard responsibility as party members and elected leaders in our society. Please bless them and their families. We ask that you would give them the imagination, courage and support they need to work towards legislation that will steward our part of the world well.
Amen
Today’s Action
Inform yourself
Take some time to read up on your chosen political party’s green policies, so you can challenge them to do more, keep to their pledges at the next election or maybe even switching party – you may want to keep in mind that scientific consensus agree that in order to stand a chance of 1.5 degrees of global heating we need to keep fossil fuels in the ground and also, all other devolved nations have committed to net zero by 2050. You could start by looking for those sorts of pledges to gauge the seriousness with which they treat climate change. Here are the climate policies of the 5 main parties:
Alliance | DUP | SDLP | Sinn Fein | UUP
Future Action Suggestion
Assembly elections are coming up in May ‘22 – let candidates know that strong climate policy is a key voting area for you. You can find your candidates email at this website - http://aims.niassembly.gov.uk/mlas/search.aspx
