DOMESTIC – What’s going on in my home?
Day 7 – Food: Eat seasonally, Buy loose & Choose Veg
Think about how far food has travelled before you buy. Asparagus in October? Probably not locally grown as they are in season in the spring here. Have a google into what is in season before you go to the shop, and let that dictate your menu for the week. Or if you’re a “inspired while shopping” kind of person, pay attention to the country of origin before you buy. The fewer food miles, the better.
Supermarkets and grocers alike sell loose fruit and veg. You can bring your own small bags, or just add them to your basket without any bag. As long as there’s a barcode to scan, the cashiers won’t bat an eyelid!
Meat and dairy production is responsible for 14% of global climate-changing emissions – could you reduce your meat/dairy consumption? If you’re a regular carnivore, consider installing a meat-free Monday into your week or think about reducing it to one meal a day. For those of us who are already cutting down, we might consider only having meat on weekends and replacing dairy products with alternatives such as oat or soy.
Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you for the gift of seasons and their reminder of the beauty and diversity of your creation. Help us to be mindful of our food choices and the impact they can have on the environment. Grant us the courage to make changes where we can, grace when we cannot, and wisdom to know the difference.
Amen
