Day 9 – Waste: Do a Plastic Audit
Unfortunately two thirds of our recycling in the UK is sent abroad where it’s hard to track what exactly happens to it but the sad reality is that much of it is dumped and burned, clogging waterways and releasing harmful gases into the air. It’s great therefore if we can avoid buying plastic altogether, especially if it’s only designed for single use.
Today’s Action
Take stock of what plastic you use on a day-to-day basis for a week which you throw out or recycle and see if you can replace them with alternatives or reusable items. We have some suggestions below:
• Takeaway Coffee Cups – we like ecoffee’s reusable cups.
• Water bottles – we like chillys water bottles – a bit more expensive but make a nice gift.
• Plastic Razor – replace with one safety razor, which lasts forever and is so much cheaper in the long run!
• Tooth brushes – we like brushbox.
• Wipes – lots of products on cheeky wipes to replace disposables.
• Cling Film – Lakeland has all sorts of eco options for food storage or – for leftovers in the fridge - you can simply cover them with a plate.
• Bin bags – if you compost your food waste, do you really need a black bin bag? Consider opting out and simply emptying your kitchen bin straight into your black bin.
